后记
Jim Tucker 博士在《Return To Life》 一书的第三章(The Boy From Barra)专门介绍了这个案例,包括了不少记录片之外的内容,比如:
Another three months went by because Cameron’s mother pulled out of the project. The producers were ultimately able to get her back on board and were ready to proceed. In the hurry-up-and-wait fashion that seems to be the norm in television, they contacted me to plan a trip to Scotland as soon as possible. I would meet Cameron and his family in Glasgow, and we would then go together to Barra.
Several people contacted me about the name Shane after the documentary aired. Seanapparently means “old” in Gaelic, and the term for grandfather is seanair or seanathair. One woman wrote from the UK to say that her husband was from the Outer Hebrides, and his family referred to his father as Sean even though his actual name was something completely different. I’m not sure Sean would be pronounced there exactly like Shane, but it is evidently quite close.
The first name hardly matters, though, if the last name doesn’t match. In this case, the only Robertson family we could find, though their life on Barra matched Cameron’s statements in a general way, did not experience the specific events he had described. I was concerned we had latched onto the name too quickly. Cameron began by describing people and events he said he remembered, and it was only later that he gave the name Shane Robertson. He may have mistakenly put that name into his memories. In retrospect, perhaps we should have searched more intensely for a family whose father had been hit by a car and who had lost a child at an early age. Calum the historian had not heard of such a family, but he knew the southern part of the island better than the north, which is where Cameron’s memories of watching planes landing on the beach would have taken place. We went with the name because it offered the potential of a definite verification, but that may have been a mistake. If Cameron was in fact remembering another family, that would mean his reaction at the Robertson house was perhaps from seeing a house similar enough to the one from his past life that he mistook it for that one.
